Tulsa’s Most Significant Election in Two Decades

The November 11th election will be very important to the structure of our city government. Seven City Councilors will be elected or re-elected and four ballot questions will be decided:

  1. Should we add three more members who will be elected city wide (i.e. “At Large”) and the mayor to the City Council?
  2. Should city elections be non-partisan?
  3. Should we return to 2 year terms for councilors?
  4. Should we change to a City Manager form of government?

Questions 1, 2 and 3 have been proposed by a group of local citizens, “Save Our Tulsa” The fourth question was proposed by the Tulsa City Council. There is no known organized opposition to questions 2 and 3, but “Tulsans Defending Democracy” has led the opposition to any “At Large” councilors for several years Because of the significance of this election the Day Alliance of All Souls Unitarian Church has arranged a public forum to inform potential voters about these ballot questions. The speakers will be:

  • Leonard Eaton, a founder of Save Our Tulsa
  • Councilor Bill Christiansen who supports the City Manager proposal
  • Councilor GT Bynum who opposes both proposals to change to Tulsa’s form of government
  • Greg Bledsoe, a founder of “Tulsans Defending Democracy”

The Fast Forward Transit Plan Open House is planned for Thursday, July 21 at the Central Center, 1028 E. 6th St. (just west of 6th and Peoria), from 6 to 8 p.m.

This is your chance to review the plan and submit comments and ask questions.  Staff from INCOG and the consultant team will be on hand to answer questions. The event is an open house, however short presentations about the plan will be made at 6:15 and 7:15 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

The transit system plan identifies and prioritizes key traffic corridors in the Tulsa region. This is followed by an analysis of transportation modes and recommendations for future public transportation needs. This is the first step in creating a financially viable public transportation program for the greater Tulsa area.

Beginning July 21, there will be a comment period, lasting through August 22.  Comments may be submitted via mail, e-mail, fax or on the web. You can view copies of the plan at the open house event on July 21, online at www.fastforwardplan.org or at the following Tulsa City County Library locations: Central Library, Rudisill Library, Zarrow Library, Hardesty Library and Martin Library.

All documents will be available for downloading online and at libraries beginning July 21.

The Brookside Neighborhood Association is typically slow during the summer months. With the kids out of school and the sweltering temperatures, there is no reason to host a meeting or plan activities. July’s monthly board meeting usually falls so close to Independence Day, it’s been postponed the past three years. Occasionally we have some news to report in the summer. However, this particular season has been as dry as the weather, so we have moved the next newsletter publication back a couple months.

We do have more TPD Riverside newsletters to post, so here are the next three.

PLANiTULSA’s has started it’s Small Area and Neighborhood Revitalization Planning.

“The completed Tulsa Comprehensive Plan, updated through the two-year PLANiTULSA process, provides the solid foundation for new and ongoing neighborhood planning efforts. These community based efforts will continue to produce small area plans which are intended to be adopted as elements of the citywide comprehensive plan. These plans will guide implementation and revitalization efforts including projects, partnerships, programs, policies and procedures.”

The Brookside Infill Neighborhood Detailed Implementation Plan is available on the City of Tulsa’s website. More than a dozen documents, including concept illustrations, show details about landscaping, curb bump outs, commercial and residential development, sidewalks, signage, lighting, and much more.

Twelve other neighborhood plans have also been developed, and they can be found on the city’s website as well.
